Arthur Kingdons' Winning Theme Portfolio 2008

My winning Theme Portfolio

by Trevor Rees

The theme for this portfolio was images from UK freshwater.

All images are from Stoney Cove and are taken in less than 6 metres of water over the winter when the visibility was at its best. The images were taken over several Saturday mornings when Stoney is heaving with other divers – fortunately most divers avoid the shallows.

A theme tile was included in the middle just in case the viewer was not sure what the theme was. The images are simple straight forward shots, yet of different subjects - all taken with a Nikon D80 and Sea & Sea housing. The trickiest shot to get right was the top centre weed/ Snell’s window, as balancing strobe and available light just below the surface whilst holding my breath to avoid bubbles ruining the surface, was quite awkward.

  1. Weed sunburst, Tokina 35mm 1/200 sec @f16 400ISO
  2. Weed/Snell’s window, Tokina 10-17@10mm 1/60 sec @f11 400ISO
  3. Diver and sunburst, Tokina 10-17@10mm 1/60sec @f11 400ISO
  4. Perch, Tokina 35mm 1/60sec @f8 400ISO
  5. Crayfish, Tokina 35mm 1/60sec @f8 400ISO
  6. Pike Tokina 35mm 1/60sec@f8 400ISO

It’s all very encouraging that people are prepared to vote for UK images alongside all those blue water sharks, dolphins and crocodiles!

Trevor specialises in underwater photography and has been a diver for nearly 30 years. Considerable diving experience, especially in the UK, allows him to concentrate on the all important image. The passion for underwater photography started 25 years ago and this has led to a wide variety of work from close up macro through to wide angle scenics.

Based near Worcester in the Midlands, Trevor works in the water industry, but is always to be found planning for his next dive with a camera.
